New flagpoles at Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be dedicated May 28

OLYMPIA – Installation work is nearly complete for three new flagpoles at the state’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Campus. The Association of Washington Generals donated more than $3,000 to this project last year.

This is just one of many activities being done to prepare the campus for Memorial Day on May 28.

This is the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The flagpoles, which were part of the original memorial design but not included during the construction, will fly the U.S., state and National League of POW/MIA Families flags.

The flagpoles will be dedicated following the annual Olympia Thunder Run event, which is sponsored by the Vietnam Vets/Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club. This Memorial Day event typically draws about 200 veterans on motorcycles to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This year’s Memorial Day observance begins at noon. 1. Installing a flagpole in the ground is a bit more ambitious, but it’s a do-it-yourself project if you’re working with a lightweight aluminum flagpole.
